She sits on his lap and kisses him forcefully.
He hesitates but kisses her back.
I turn away, swallowing
The lump in my throat.
My heart throbs painfully.
I can almost feel it,
Breaking in two.
They break and she walks away,
Smiling smugly.
He starts talking to me,
As if she had never been there.
We laugh like the best of friends,
Joking about memories passed.
He smiles.
My heart skips a beat.
We sit together, staring at the sky.
His skin touches mine.
A fire slowly spreads through my veins.
He looks over at me.
I smile meekly.
Moving closer, he puts his hand on my hips.
I inhale sharply.
He smiles.
His intoxicating breath on my face.
I lean in.
Closing the space between us.
Be brings a hand to my cheek;
Caressing in gently.
I close my eyes and reach up to touch
My lips to his.
Suddenly, he pulls away.
My eyes snap open, narrowed with pain.
He sits beside me,
One hand still on my thigh,
The other clutching a phone to his ear.
“Hey baby,” he murmurs half-heartedly.
I look down at the ground.
Tears threaten to fall.
“I’ll be right there,” he finally says.
He snaps the phone shut and sighs,
His face in his hands.
“I gotta go,”
He whispers just loud enough for me to hear.
I nod and mumble an agreement.
He shoots me a sympathetic glance.
I avoid his eyes.
He sighs heavily
And strokes my face once before
He jumps up to his car.
Once I can no longer hear the buzzing of his engine,
I wrap my arms around my legs,
And cry to myself over
What should have been.
But never was.
